Our success rate at Take Stock in Children Palm Beach is a result of a comprehensive approach provided by our program. One of the proven success factors is the role of the mentor. The mentor program helps boost high school graduation rates. Mentors help students acquire skills useful for job-seeking, interviewing and entering the workforce.Mentoring sessions range from 45-60 minutes and normally occur at a school near your home or workplace, during school hours, but due to COVID-19, sessions are being held virtually. The days and times of mentoring sessions are arranged between the mentor and mentee depending on their individual schedules and classes.Take Stock in Children Palm Beach mentors learn the principles and guidelines of school-based, academic-focused mentoring. They participate in an orientation session and receive a manual that contains tools for addressing the general needs of their students as well as on-going training.

YOUNG WOMEN WHO WINThis one-on-one mentor program supports the educational, life and career goals of students in Palm Beach County. Volunteer mentors are matched with female youth in middle and high schools to provide guidance, inspiration and real-life experience in a trusting environment, with the goal of empowering young women to prevent absenteeism, develop coping mechanisms and become leaders of tomorrow.Who is a mentor and what is the commitment?A mentor is a professional, committed and caring man or woman who chooses to devote time with a young person, offering them support, guidance, and encouragement. Our MENTORS are caring volunteers who share a one-to-one friendship with a child of the same gender. As a youth mentor, you are a positive role model who guides, supports and encourages a child within The Children’s Healing Institute. You will be part of a very special group of people making the difficult times of growing up a little bit easier.

Here are some facts about CHI’s Youth Mentoring Program:
    • Our volunteer mentors are carefully screened and trained by clinical social workers before being matched with a child.
    • The volunteer mentor and child participate together in fun, cultural, and educational activities virtually or in the community.
    • Mentors connect with their child at least twice a month for a minimum total of four weekly hours, for at least one year.
    • Physical distancing does not mean social disconnection. With the use of technology, mentors and mentees will still be able to connect to one another in a positive way to maintain healthy mentoring relationships. When it is safe to do so, relationships will have the option to transition to in-person meetings.

    COVID-19 Emergency Relief Fund for

    FLIPANY
1777 N Dixie Hwy, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33305

FLIPANY (Florida Introduces Physical Activity and Nutrition to Youth), is a South Florida non-profit whose mission is to foster healthy lives through nutrition education, physical activities, and wellness initiatives. The number of children and families in need of our services has surged during COVID-19. During April and May, FLIPANY distributed over 650,000 meals at over 70 distribution sites—more than a 330% increase from May of 2019. We do not project a decrease in necessary meals for the remainder of this year. School and camp closures during the summer mean children are going without meals. As unemployment rates continue to hang heavy, parents are torn between feeding their own families and keeping the lights on.We can be the force that changes this.On March 16, FLIPANY was activated by the state of Florida, as an emergency food provider through our contract with the Florida Department of Agriculture (FDACS). Much has been done, but there are ways you can ensure a child enjoy a nutritious lunch, a family giggles about their day around a full dinner table, and a parent can find some semblance of normalcy during this uncertain time.We are calling on you to contribute to our COVID-19 Emergency Fund. With a goal of $350,000, FLIPANY can provide adults/caregivers with grab-n-go meals and weekend meals for their families. These funds are critical to ensure our services can operate through the school year.

The most meaningful aspect of our COVID-19 Rapid Response Initiative has been our Hot Meals for Young Cancer Heroes Program. Many of our kids are quarantined at the hospital, and while that is the safest place for them, it creates a substantial burden on families already coping with the financial and emotional devastation of their child’s life-threatening illness. Hospital regulation permits only one parent to be with their child, and that parent is not free to leave the premises, so parent and child are in lockdown at the hospital until the child is well enough to be released. Through generous donations, we are able to partner with local restaurants and other individuals to give hot lunches to families.POST is committed to keeping the Hot Meals for Young Cancer Heroes going until the pandemic is over, and we need the community’s help. We are looking for volunteers willing to pick up the food from the restaurant and deliver the food to Palm Beach Children’s Hospital in West Palm Beach.

Sam Dratch was just 36 years old when he died on October 6, 2018. He was a graduate of the Maret School in Washington, DC, Vassar College and the University of Michigan Law School. He was a tenacious, dedicated proud Palm Beach County Public Defender, devoted to fighting for the rights of the underrepresented. Sam was also a voracious reader and lover of film. He read widely – fiction and non-fiction - and enjoyed most film genres. The Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach was one of his favorite spots; he visited almost daily, picking up or dropping off materials. His mother, Patricia Eanet, was frequently with Sam in West Palm and noted that they stopped by the Library almost daily. Sometimes they would sit and read or play games in the Teen Homework Help Center. It was very clear that Sam felt right at home in the Mandel Public Library.
